Horizon was commissioned by Jacquie Miller in October of 2020. The piece is based upon the following four quotes from Amelia Earhart, the first female aviator to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean:
– Adventure is worthwhile in itself.
– The most difficult thing is the decision to act, the rest is merely tenacity. The fears are paper tigers. You can do anything you decide to do. You can act to change and control your life; and the procedure, the process is its own reward.
– Women, like men, should try to do the impossible. And when they fail, their failure should be a challenge to others.
– In soloing – as in other activities – it is far easier to start something than it is to finish it.
These quotes can be read aloud as part of the performance by a designated speaker or they can be omitted and the work can be performed without a speaker. Horizon was premiered by Jacquie Miller on her graduate recital at Campbellsville University in 2021.
