Dynamotion is the first of three works for drum set and percussion ensemble that I composed as part of my sabbatical project for the fall of 2019 at Campbellsville University. The title pays homage to the "Dynamo Room", a percussion practice room at Belmont University tucked away on the corner of campus. I spent many hours in this room practicing drum set, keyboard percussion, and just about everything else for my private studies with Todd London as part of my masters degree. Although the drum set feature during the middle part of the work is notated in the sheet music, the soloist may choose to create/improvise their own part, allowing a more accessible or more challenging solo depending on the performer's ability level. The mallet quintet is comprised of 2 vibes and 3 marimbas (two 4.3-octave, one 5-octave). Dynamotion was premiered by the Belmont University Percussion Ensemble (Dr. Chris Norton, director) in the fall of 2019.

Eagle Rockabye was premiered by Ben Cantrell at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro as part of his Doctor of Musical Arts degree in 2020 under Dr. Eric Willie.

Hexyl (2015)

Publisher: Tapspace

Level: Med-Advanced

Duration: 3:15

Price: $15

Purchase from Tapspace

Hexyl delivers melody, dynamic nuance, and groove. Using a simple 4-piece bop setup, the piece begins at a whisper with the main theme on just the cymbals. Over the course of the introduction, this main theme is developed around the kit until it is firmly entrenched in the listener’s ear. At this point, the thematic explorations take on more complexity without losing the listener. Following a standard arc, the solo ends as it begins. There is a high degree of accessibility inherent in this work, as the entire thing grooves along at a very moderate tempo. This makes Hexyl an ideal choice for developing performers looking to further their musicality on the instrument while solidifying timekeeping skills.

TigerLike is the second of three works for drum set and percussion ensemble that I composed as part of my sabbatical project for the fall of 2019 at Campbellsville University. The title pays tribute to the “Tigers” of the Clemson University Percussion Ensemble who premiered the piece in the spring of 2020 under the direction of Dr. Paul Buyer. Although the drum set feature during the middle part of the work is notated in the sheet music, the soloist may choose to create/improvise their own part, allowing a more accessible or more challenging solo depending on the performer's ability level. The mallet sextet is comprised of bells, 2 vibes and 3 marimbas (two 4.3-octave, one 5-octave).
